It has been almost 3 years since Charles started to put his dream into a reality; the dream of representing Jamaica at the Olympic Games. After 7 international tournaments in 2009 and an additional 8 in 2010, he is well underway to qualifying for the London 2012 Summer Olympics. Since 2009, Charles has gone from not having a BWF world ranking to being one of the top 8 players from the Pan American region and ranked within the top 120 in the world.
Since March 2009 Charles has been training on his own with no coaching support or many sparring players. Charles was aware that he needed to place himself in an environment that will enhance his skills and performance levels in order to achieve his goals. Charles took the initiative to further his chances for qualification and had taken measures to enhance the quality of his training and preparation for competing in BWF sanctioned tournaments to improve his ranking. Charles moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to further his training at the ClearOne Badminton Academy. His training stint there from November 2010 to July 2011 was a great experience and significantly boosted Charles' momentum leading into the Olympic qualifying year. Charles has moved back to Ontario where he trains and coaches at the Lee's Badminton Training Centre.
This journey is far from complete and in many ways has really just commenced for Charles. Having started on May 2nd, 2011, the Olympic Qualifying year has only a few months left until ending on April 29th, 2012. During this period Charles will need to improve and maintain his ranking to be one of 38 players selected out of the top 100 to compete in the men’s singles event in London 2012.
Since being back in Ontario and working with the training group at Lee's Badminton, Charles has had some impressive results in a short span of time. Some of these are the bronze medalist in the Pan Am Games men's singles; the bronze medalist in the CAREBACO International men's singles; and the gold medalist in the Dominican Republic International men's doubles. These results along with others have significantly improved Charles' world ranking and his chances of achieving his Olympic dream.
