Charles has been playing badminton competitively for Jamaica since 1995. His initial training started with Dalton Reid and continued with Dr. Kingsley Ford before he left Jamaica in 2000. Charles has been an ambassador for Jamaica representing the country at various international events such as the Pan Am & Commonwealth Games.

In the summer of 2000, Charles moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to undergo intense training at the Selangor Badminton Club under the guidance of Moe Chin Kiat. He spent one year training and playing state tournaments and a few internationals in South East Asia where he improved significantly and gained invaluable experience. Charles left Malaysia the following summer and joined his family who moved to British Columbia, Canada. Whilst there, he trained under the guidance of Ram Nayyar at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club. After nine months there Charles took an opportunity to play in a professional league in Denmark. Charles moved to Denmark in August of 2002 where he helped the Ikast Badminton Klub win their division.

Near the end of the season, Charles was awarded the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship which enabled him to train at the International Badminton Academy in Copenhagen, Denmark. He played for the Kobenhavn Badminton Klub, and participated in numerous international tournaments in an effort to qualify in the mixed doubles event (partner Nigella Suanders of Jamaica) for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens. In doing so, they achieved the highest ranking of any Jamaican in the sport of badminton of 27th in the world, and in men’s single’s 71. Unfortunately Charles and Nigella missed out on qualification by only four places at the end of the qualification period.

In June 2004, Charles returned to Canada to continue his education. He graduated in 2008 with a degree in Social Development Studies and Management from the University of Waterloo (UW) in Ontario. During his time at UW, he assisted the Varsity Badminton Team in winning an OUA Championship title and 4 title silver medals. Charles has also been a three time team captain, two time league MVP and a five time All-Star player.
